Projects

Here at CPBS, we have a variety on-going projects for
reviving old buildings and improving facilities on campus.

Below you can find information on some of these projects.
They are currently alphabetically, not by priority.

A Piece of Cedar Point Fundraising Efforts
The infamous gooseneck lamp.
This initiative is still in the planning stages, but keep a look out for its launch!  We will be selling surplus station items of historical significance in order to finance small station projects, such as maintenance of our scientific collections.  Items that you may see popping up for sale in the future include Goodall reel cases once used heavily as station ashtrays and cast-iron-based antique gooseneck lamps used in times pre-dating our modern fiber optic gooseneck lamps.  To reiterate, these items are NOT YET FOR SALE, but once we work out logistics we will be sure to send out notifications to everyone following our Facebook page.

Cedar Point Ranch Barn Project
A historic barn (built in 1927) sits a few feet from our compost pile.  This barn is in a tragic state of neglect and has not been used in many years.  This summer, a group of ambitious students, staff members, and even a mom came out to work on cleaning up this building.  Though the project was not able to be completed, the barn looks worlds better than it did at the beginning of this summer.  A tree that was crowding the barn was removed, back access to the barn was improved, and some of the junk inside the barn was extracted.  Treasures untold were found inside of the barn covered in a thick layer of dust and the stagnant smell of deterioration.  Some of these items, such as a near-mountain of Goodall reel cases (once used as station ashtrays), may eventually become part of the A Piece of Cedar Point fundraising efforts.
The barn before clean up.
Volunteer, Matt Adams, helps remove
trees during the CPBS barn clean up day.
Floating Dock Project
Cedar Point once had its very own floating dock, but the dock was removed during one of Lake Ogallala's many renovations.  Unfortunately, the paperwork regarding the replacement of said dock has been misplaced.  CPBS would like to find a way to rebuild the old floating dock to make water further from the shore more accessible for sampling and for recreational purposes.

Goodall Lodge Renovation
The Goodall Lodge is a wonderful building in which many of us have created unforgettable memories.  The old gal has been around a long time and she's really due for a renovation.  UNL architecture students were assigned a project for developing renovation plans for this building.  The plans chosen by the station included an expanded, more updated kitchen, better heating and cooling of the dining hall, construction of a second classroom space in the basement, the addition of a 100 person auditorium for conferences, lectures, and performances, a wooden balcony on the north side, and the construction of an outdoor classroom.  These plans estimated that $2 million would be needed to make such changes, which would transform the utility of one of Cedar Point's most recognizable buildings while still keeping her classic Girl Scout camp look in tact.  CPBS is currently looking for ways to fund this project.

Save the Bunkhouse
A small bunkhouse is nestled in the hillside of Cedar Point just before the break in trees that approaches the main campus.  We would like to move and restore the bunkhouse to increase the amount of housing we have available to researchers, interns, professors, and TAs.  The plan would be to move the bunkhouse into the vicinity of the Prickly Pear units before getting it cleaned up and ready for inhabitants.

Save the Ranch House
An old ranch house is nestled in the hillside of Cedar Point just before the break in trees that approaches the main campus.  This building was abandoned after a deer mouse infestation a few decades ago, but is still quite beautiful despite its desperate need for cosmetic work.  We would like to someday restore this building for housing researchers, professors, and their families or for hosting small meetings and conferences.

Solar Roofs for  CPBS
As one of the many steps on the road to sustainability, Cedar Point would like to put new, insulated, white, metal roofs on all of the buildings.  These roofs would not only keep cabins more cool and require less maintenance than the current roof shingling, they would also prime the roofs for solar panels.  The hope is that with enough panels we could eventually power student cabins independently.  This would be yet another step towards creating a self-sustaining station.

Trail Building Project
CPBS has many trails that radiate out from the main campus and into the hills and box canyons of the surrounding region.  These trails have already been blazed, but are in need of maintenance from years of erosion by both wind and rain.  CPBS would like get volunteers to work on clearing brush, smoothing out and widening paths, and making the trails more accessible.

Trail Marking Project
CPBS has many trails that radiate out from the main campus and into the hills and box canyons of the surrounding region.  These trails have already been blazed, but have not been officially marked.  There are also no directional signs for these trails, which we would like to change.  CPBS would like get volunteers to work on creating signage and measuring out markings.

Trail and Site Mapping Project
CPBS has many trails that radiate out from the main campus and into the hills and box canyons of the surrounding region.  We would really like to create a map of the trails that can be given to students looking for a good hike or others who drop by to see the station's trails.  We also have several notable sites along these trails that are not mapped or marked and we would like to change that!  CPBS would greatly appreciate volunteers to work on creating trail and site maps of the station.

Wash House Re-purposing Project
Earlier this summer, two students spent many of their Saturdays here at the station cleaning up an abandoned wash house/garden/apiary.  The site has had many names and functions, but has been all but forgotten over the past several years.  These students have managed to get the site cleaned up with a little bit of help from others staying at the station and would like to see the standing structure converted into an animal observatory.  Thus far, there have been no formal plans drawn or estimates made for such a structure, but the informal plans are as follows.  The site, conveniently located along the trail leading to Alligator Canyon, will be converted into a seating area (with coffee if we are lucky!) for silently observing the natural flora and fauna of the woods emerging out of the west.  With the addition of a stock tank in the valley (another possible future project), the site would become the perfect place for watching birds, deer, and butterflies on a blissful Cedar Point morning or evening.  It would also make a great spot for night time animal observations or for stargazing.

This mess has disappeared thanks to this year's volunteers!

This part still stands, but is now a more clean and useable space.

Check back for updates about these and other CPBS projects!
